Completely unrelated to art
As always, at Christmas time, my mom gets to reminiscing and asks me about my friends from high school and college. And as always, this gets me started looking for people between Christmas and New Year.
I have a couple of friends (sisters) who have been very difficult to find, but this year, I seemed to have found the tracks of the younger sister on veromi.com. We'll call her 'Lily Doe.' And according to veromi.com, she's now married to 'Joseph D. Smith.' (Not their real names, of course.)
Then I proceeded to find 'Lily Smith' on linkedin.comthe right college, a very reasonable location and probable career...terrific! I contacted her via linkedin. Then I never heard back.
So I figured, well, wrong person despite the good match, or she wasn't interested in renewing my acquaintance. That was that.
Today, I went to update the profile photo for my facebook fan page (yes, there is one...), and boom, I have a new fan, and it's one 'Joseph D. Smith,' middle initials and all!
Curious.
I have written 'Joseph D. Smith,' hoping to maybe fill in some of the blanks. We'll see what I hear back.

For those of you who don't facebookI figure this means that the gods think I'm flossing and brushing right. And for Shu-mei, who can't believe that I noticed thisI just spat out my toothpaste, I had my face in the sink, I was staring right at it, how could I NOT notice?
Unfortunately, the last couple of days have not been productive in the studio. For some reason, I had bouts of stomachaches all day yesterday. On and off, and through the night. Thank heavens it didn't continue today. And today was mostly a Portland Open Studios day. Shipping out tour guides, picking up tour guides, incremental updates on the website. I still haven't finished Kate's profile.
Tonight was the China Council's annual membership meeting/dinner, so that took up almost 5 hours! For a meal! Well, ok, there was a talk too, and this year, by the Portland Art Museum director, about the new exhibit China Design Now. I'm sure it was an interesting talk, but unfortunately, I did not have a very good seatthe last table, close to the rest of the restaurant which had diners not involved with the event, and the other Chinese patrons at my table kept on talking to me through the talk. Yes, this is always a problemwhile the speaker is talking up there, half the Chinese people in the audience are having their own conversations. I can't exactly just ignore them when they say something to me, and if I respond, it just keeps the conversation going. What do you do?!

More on gocco touch-ups
Dr. Russ asked for more details on the gocco touch-ups, so here's a bit more info:
I use the same ink as I'm printing with, no thinning. If I'm using the ink straight out of the tube, then that's what I use to touch up. If I'm using ink I've saved (as was the case in the previous post), then I use that. If I am using ink that I've thinned (sometimes saved ink seems a little stiff, so I thin it with a drop of baby oil), then I use that same thinned ink.
Also, the brush has really very little ink on it. After I pick up some ink on the brush, I wipe as much of it off on the palette as I can. When I touch up, I'm very slowly building up the color. I might brush over the spot 6, 7 times, or more, before I get a coverage that matches the surrounding area. Occasionally I make mistakes, such as the one I made where there was more ink on the brush and the mistake showed as a stray line in the concentric circles. By having to build up very slowly, you reduce the chance that a single mistake will be very noticeable at all.
Also, I used a very tiny brush in this case (12/0), since I was dealing with really fine details. But I have several brushes of different sizes dedicated to touching up. Some are 3s and 2s. Just depends on what I'm doing.
Maybe I should make a video!
Now for something completely weird and unrelated.
I can get stressed out pretty easily, especially when I have so many different deadlines coming up in the next few weeks. Portland Open Studios is this coming weekend (and the weekend after), and I've NOT started to prepare. I'm mentally preparedI know what I'm going to do, I just haven't done it yet.
Now normally, I would just have some obvious stress dream, like I'm trying to get something very simple done, but all kinds of things keep getting in the way and I can't accomplish anything. But last night, I didn't exactly dream, mostly because I didn't exactly fall asleep. I was in this semi awake state and I was very worried that I would find a yellow tabby stray cat covered in fleas.
I was fully aware that I did NOT actually have a stray cat, I was just worried that I might find one. And I kept on thinking what I would do to remove the fleaswhat kind of shampoo, how should I go about shampooing it, etc. And then I would remember that I do, in fact, know exactly how to apply flea shampoo so I should stop worrying about it. But it was of no use.
I got up a few times, both to go to the bathroom and to try to clear my head a bit, but as soon as I got back into bed, the same thoughts came backwhat if I found a yellow tabby covered in fleas?

This 'n that
Today didn't quite turn out to be as I anticipated, and I'm pretty sure I won't finish laminating the prints tomorrow.
It was kind of a weird day thoughI showed up at 11am for my appt w/ my trainer, only to see her working with someone else for another half hour. Turns out, she had me down at 11:30am. OK. Then I got home and there was a msg from the dentist, saying that I had an appt tomorrow at 10:20am, but I clearly remembered that my appt was at 9:20am. So I checked my calendar...yup, I wrote down 11am for the appt w/ the trainer, and 9:20am for the dentist.
Then I checked the appt slips that they gave me and, aha!, I was NOT wrong. The trainer wrote 11am on the appt slip she gave me, and the dentist's office manager wrote down 9:20am on the slip she gave me.
I feel so vindicated.
But all that is neither here nor there.
Doug and I went down to look at the neighborhood coffee shop that we'll have a little holiday show at this December. Then I went on down to PDX Contemporary where there was a postcard writing eventsome 40, 50 women showed up to write postcards to undecided women voters to persuade them to vote for Obama. I was really impressed with the turnout, but it is hard for me to imagine how anyone can be undecided for this election.
While I was out and about, I also checked Art Media, Utrecht's, and Oblation for a teflon coated bone folder (as suggested by Dr. Russ), but there doesn't seem to be one in Portland!
But back to the election
Here's a campaign to donate money to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin's name:
https://secure.ga0.org/02/pp10000_inhonor
Use the menu in the left column and select Honorary or Memorial Donations. This will change the donation application, where you can fill in the address to let PP know where to send the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card.
I got this address off the McCain website contact page:
John McCain 2008
P.O. Box 16118
Arlington, VA 22215
You can split up your donations into smaller chunks to generate more cards sent to McCain (instead of 1 $100 donation, do 10 $10 ones).
Even more election stuff
Apparently, there was an anti-Palin rally in Anchorage that drew a huge crowd. A friend sent 20+ pictures, here are a few to share. I did not see a credit for these photos, but will add if I find out:

Photo day
I went over the mountain and through the woods to spend Mother's Day with my mom this weekend. No work in the studio to report, but it's a good day to catch up on some photos.
First, in the Play With Your Food category:

I'm taking guesses as to what the food items are. I'll even give one of them away: lemon. You just have to guess the other one. (Another hint: this was part way through my dinner at Koji Osakaya tonight.)
In the Garden. This is the corner of our yard; the dogwood, irises, and azalea are blooming:

The tulips by the front steps:

The Things-Are-Falling-Apart-Here spot:

Dogwood and bachelor's buttons, I think. It came up by itself:

The crabapple:

And a bleeding heart tucked away between things:

Pillow book III, day n+5
No pictures today, but I finished the edges of the tulle pages of book III. Again, took a lot of experimenting to get the tension right on the serger for this task. Of course, now that I have the edges sewn up, I see some other problems with the book which I'll have to deal with. See this entry for the previous day on this book.
Still decluttering the house. OK, I said I wasn't going to clean for the Sock Mending Party, and I'm not really cleaning. But really, there's a lot of old junk mail, old not-junk mail, old postcards, old magazines, old paper work of all kinds, that need to be dealt with.
OK, so here's a somewhat entertaining tale. This actually happened a few days ago, but it took me a bit to figure it out. We had a pretty foggy night, I think it was Tuesday or Wednesday, and I went out for my evening walk a little later than usual. Anyhow, I was walking along my usual route, and I looked up and saw this dog down the street. It had seen me already, and it was frozen in mid stride with one leg in mid air, just tracking me as I walked towards it. I thought perhaps it was tied up to the tree or something, and thought what a horrible night to leave your dog out like that; it was cold and wet.
As I got closer, I could see that it was not tied to anything; it continued to track me without moving. I thought about going over to check it out, but had second thoughts since it was behaving so oddly. At the corner, I turned onto the side street (away from the dog). I walked a few steps and turned to check on the dog. Well, it had moved and was walking towards me, but as soon as it saw me looking at it, it froze again.
I continued on my route for another half a block before I looked again. And this time, the dog had changed directions and was paying me no attention.
I think I've decided that it was a coyote. It was definitely the right size, shape, and color, although it was fluffier, but that might be a winter coat. They're definitely around in the neighborhood, and I heard one baying in the middle of the night about a week ago.
So that's my encounter with the "friendly" neighborhood coyote.
For a daily dose of coyote stories, check this out.

Pillow Book II, day 2
Started pinning and basting the images for the 2nd pillow book. I think I'm getting a sunburn from the full spectrum light I've been using in the studio, I'm standing right underneath it to stack up the tulle sheets and basting them. My forehead hurts. But, onto the book. Here's one configuration, the tulle pages are just lying on a piece of gray fabric which is lying on top of an old pillow:

Then I decided that the upper left corner needed to be more visible, so I took 1 sheet off the middle right and basted that on the upper left:

Doesn't' look like there's a lot of difference here, but I'm happier with it. However, I'm also concluding that the middle one is far too readable, so I'll be taking 1 or 2 sheets off that and adding it to the others. That will have to wait until tomorrow.
Originally, my plan was to stitch the tulle pages on the pillow right along the edges of the image and then having the extra tulle push up against each other so that they stood straight up, making the pillow not so comfortable for a good night's sleep. But now that I'm seeing the layers on top of each other, I'm liking that. So I'm thinking of other ways to make an uncomfortable pillow, like pins or something.
See this entry for day 1.
So today, 2 weird things
1. Kitty cat is now on a pumpkin pie diet. Her belly is going bald, and one of the many reasons why a kitty might go bald in the belly is constipation, which the vet suspects is the cause. So she's to be given 2 Tbsp of canned pumpkin a day. And she likes it!
2. Canned pumpkin is not be found in the canned vegetable section. I went to 2 grocery stores before I finally asked someone and found out that canned pumpkin is in the baking section. Now, does that make any sense?
3. Oops, this is one extra weird thing: I always thought the Sleep Number Beds were made up for A Prairie Home Companion, with all those fake commercials. I was catching up on the NYT Sunday Magazine today, and wouldn't you know it, there was an article about sleep, and those Sleep Number Beds are apparently for real. Now I wonder if the Ketchup Advisory Board is for real too.

Yippy!
I got my grant! The grant that I was applying for back in August. Got the letter this afternoon. I only got through the first sentence, "congratulations!" before I picked up the phone and called Mike. So that was the big news for today. And I'm so over the feeling sorry for myself part.
On other fronts, picked up my stuff from City Hall, and realized that I couldn't pick up my chicken hat until tomorrow (so no chicken hat picture tonight). Finally took the serger out for some real work. I think the free fabrics (both knits) will not work, I'll need to get some other fabric for the pillow forms. Probably need a special foot for knits. I did work a project that I've been meaning to do for a while though: converted some ripped up old bath towels into washcloths.
The Random Movie tonight was The Golden Compass. There were lots of critters that talked, so of course I loved it.
In the weird stuff categoryI heard from someone that I hadn't heard from since probably 1984. She read the NYT column on the gocco and googled me. It took me a little bit to figure out who she was. But the weird thing was, apparently she named her cat after me!

Can this really be true?
It's late, and it's been a long day, so I'll upload photos and stuff from the class tomorrow. But for now -- heard on the radio (npr, so it must be true!) that upon Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah's visit to England, the military band struck up the Star Wars Imperial March to welcome him! (And he was probably even wearing his flowing robe and all.)

A weird tale from the garden
I had a mugo pine die on me this last summer. I did not think it was possible to kill mugo pines, but I was wrong. So it had been sitting there, all brown and dried up, between the lilac and the rhodie. And since Monday is yard debris day, I decided to take the opportunity to dig it up and dump it in the yard debris can.
Well, I started digging, and digging, and digging, and surprise of all surprises, it turned out to not be a dead mugo pine after all.
Instead, I dug up the Troll Bride With One Eye in the Front and One Eye in the Back! (But she goes by Troll Bride for short.)
Apparently, on her wedding day, the Troll Bride and the Troll Groom did not invite the Wicked Witch because, well, she was wicked and they didn't like her.
The Wicked Witch being wicked, showed up at their wedding, cursed them, and voila, they turned heads first down a couple of big, black plastic pots. The last thing the Troll Bride remembers was the Wicked Witch's wicked laugh as she cackled "only a very strange gardener will come along and discover your true identity, and they only come along once in a loooong, loooong while...hahahahahah..."
It's a sad tale, and she doesn't even know where her Troll Groom is.
So here's the Troll Bride restored to her old glorious self, all dolled up for her wedding day.

And a close-up. (Yeah, the other eye is in the back. And that's her Bride's Maid, the Woodpecker.)

So, if you happen to find the Troll Groom, do let us know!

It's what's for dinner
Why is everybody saying that? Or am I just lucky?
There I was at Marco's for lunch, reading the new Natural History that just arrived. The guy at the next table, with his back to me, was wearing a t-shirt that said "Science, it's what's for dinner." I turned the page in my Natural History, and the next article (actually a short blurb) was titled "Radiation, it's what's for dinner." Hmmm...
This was a day of running around -- making copies of my grant application (7 double sided copies, clipped together), 7 copies of my resume, picking up letters from donors, etc, etc, putting together all the supporting document to complete the application. AND, the good news -- I heard from RACC that I could write in my newly confirmed exhibition date of Nov-Dec/2008 at the library. Yay! Tomorrow, I have to burn the CD, then it's all ready for delivery.
Heard from Brea at Topeka that Fatherland had not arrived. Went to the post office to check on that, and apparently, it has disappeared into thin air. The post office has no record of it even leaving the building. There was only 1 scan on it, and that was when I dropped it off. ??
After dinner, we went out for ice cream, and went into the pet store next store to visit the rats. While we were there, a woman came in to buy a rat; she didn't even look, she just asked for the smallest one. Sadly, I knew where that little rat was going. The guy at the store just reached in and grabbed the rat by the tail, and the little guy really didn't look like he wanted to go. That was how I got my first rat actually -- she was going to be someone's dinner (rats, that's what's for dinner), but I ended up with her instead. And she was such a great little rat.
The movie tonight was Sunshine, a science-fantasy-horror movie that was rather slow moving.

My treasures
My neighbor stood at my front door, holding a bag of mat boards in one hand. Son left for another state, left behind the mat boards. Do I want them? Well, mat boards of unknown provenance...I declined.
Then he said, holding out a small object in the other hand, "I found this dead, desiccated mouse in my driveway; would you like to have it?"
Well, now, I don't believe I've ever said or done anything to this neighbor that would lead him to believe that I'd want a small desiccated dead mouse. But whatd'ya know!? I did want the small, desiccated dead mouse, of unknown provenance. Except I wasn't going to touch it with my hand.
The neighbor said, "should I just leave it here on the sawhorse with all your other 'treasures'?"
Yes, I'm sure he said "treasures" in quotes.
So now I have a very dead, very desiccated and pretty cool looking, mouse on my sawhorse.
I bet your day wasn't better than THIS!
Shipped off Fatherland to Topeka, updated Alice's web site (I hope these are the final changes for the time being), and had more back and forth with Rebecca about the flowers site.
Didn't finish trimming the papers yesterday, but now I'm feeling tired enough that I don't want to do it tonight -- that's one of those things that, if you get it wrong, there's no undoing.

Who knew earwigs would be THIS popular?
Indeed, who knew! I've had people come here googling for 'earwigs' (ok), 'women squishing earwigs' (rather specific and kind of weird), and 'woman covered in earwigs' (truly yucky visuals). ??
And on another similarly weird topic, this Simon Shaheen CD is now going for $215.21 on Amazon. ??
Speaking of CD's, I finally remembered to pick up my ME music CD's that I loaned to Print Arts Northwest for their April exhibit of Middle Eastern prints. And since I was going in anyhow, spent a bit of time helping them paint the new print racks. (I had to get that in, since it was the only art related activity for the day).
And yet another weird entry:

This was Mike's dinner plate after dinner yesterday; I found it visually interesting. For some reason, I just liked the way the brown sauce wrapped around the elephant. (I take no responsibility for the placemat though.)
The movie last night (which continued on into this morning) was Ratatouille; I hardly need to add my 2 cents and say it was wonderful, but it was. But of course, I'm into rats, and rats in the kitchen don't bother me one bit.
